Help with HEXMARCH
HEXMARCH is a turn-based strategy game on tiny hex islands. You found cities, research techs, build an army and outplay up to three rivals, bots or friends, in matches of about 20 to 30 minutes. It plays in any modern browser, and the iPhone, iPad and Mac app is coming to the App Store.
Questions
How do I start playing?
Open hexmarch.alepacheco.dev/play in your browser, type a name and tap Play as guest. On the home screen, Quick game starts a small map against one easy bot, which is the best way to learn.
The manual explains every rule in a few short pages. Open it from the book button on the home screen, from Settings → How to play, or from the match menu (the ··· button) during a match.
Do I need an account?
No. You can play as a guest with just a name. A guest account lives on the device and browser you made it on, so clearing your browser's data or signing out loses it.
Where it's available you can also Sign in with Apple, and a guest can link Apple later in Settings to keep their matches.
How do I play with friends?
On the home screen tap New game, set one or more seats to Friend (the rest can be bots), choose the map and the turn length, and create the match. You'll get a six-character invite code with Share invite and Copy link buttons.
Your friends open the link, or tap Join with code on their home screen and enter the code. Codes work for 7 days, and the match starts once every seat is taken. Playing with friends is free.
How long is a turn? What happens if someone doesn't play?
When you create a match you pick the turn length: Live (90 seconds) for playing together right now, or 8 hours, 24 hours or 3 days for playing over a few days. Turns go one after another; bots play theirs instantly.
If a deadline passes, that player's turn ends. You can also nudge the player whose turn it is from the match menu, once per turn.
What is the caretaker bot?
If you miss two turns in a row, a caretaker bot plays your seat so the match keeps moving. Make any move and your seat is yours again.
How does a match end?
You win by taking every rival's cities. If no one has by the last round, the highest score wins. When one side is far ahead, the others are offered Accept defeat to wrap up quickly, or they can Play on. You can also leave a match any time with Resign in the match menu; a bot then keeps your empire going.
How do I get turn notifications?
Open Settings → Notifications and tap Turn on next to Turn alerts, then allow notifications when your device asks. You'll hear about your turns, nudges and deadlines.
This works in the app and in browsers that support web notifications. On iPhone and iPad, add HEXMARCH to your Home Screen first (in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen) and turn alerts on from there. Without alerts, the home screen lists the matches waiting for you first.
How do I delete my account?
Open Settings (the gear on the home screen), tap Delete account and confirm with Delete forever. Your account, devices, friends and purchase records are deleted, your name is removed from your matches, and matches still in progress carry on without you. This can't be undone. The privacy policy explains exactly what is removed.
If you can't open the game anymore (for example, a guest account in a browser whose data was cleared), contact me with your display name and a match you played, and I'll delete it for you.
Is it free? How do I restore purchases?
Yes, HEXMARCH is free to play against bots and with friends, with no ads. There's nothing to buy yet. An optional one-time Full Game unlock is planned for the App Store version; when it arrives, purchases will be tied to your Apple ID, so you can restore them on your other devices signed in with it.
Which devices can I play on?
Any recent browser on a phone, tablet or computer: Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge. The board needs WebGL, which all of them support. The native app for iPhone, iPad and Mac is coming to the App Store.
Something isn't working
Reload the page first; the game reconnects to your matches on its own. If the problem stays, tell me about it: what you were doing, your display name, the match (its invite code if it has one), and your device and browser. Screenshots help a lot.
